And the Winner Is....

Janae competed in our district speech finals yesterday, one of seven Grade 6 students who had won their school competitions. They talked about global warming, endangered elephants, helping the homeless, living in Winnipeg, and even Leonardo diCaprio.

Janae's speech was on missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada--a pretty heavy topic.

After the speeches, the judges called up four students who were "runners up," but Janae wasn't one of them, so we knew she had one of the top three spots.

Next they called up the third-place winner, followed by the second . . . and Janae was still in her seat.

She'd won first place!

Her school principal was there, and she came over to congratulate Janae.

Now, Janae has a gold medal, which the school will engrave with her name, placing and speech title. She also has the relief of never having to give her speech again, since she found out there is no provincial competition this year :)
