End of Summer: Family, Fun and Not So Fun

Just before summer holidays ended, we got to have a few fun times with our extended family.

Alaina, Eric and I crossed the border to go on a short, last-minute visit to see my sister Anita! We spent an afternoon at Lake Washington and then went to see Freakier Friday (my kids love their fancy theater with reclining seats!).

We tried Chick-Fil-A for the first time and also visited the temple grounds where Jason and I got married, almost 23 years ago.

We hadn't been there for a while, so Eric re-created some of our 2016 pictures....

Not quite the same with an 11-year-old, but--as usual--he made us laugh :).

The next weekend, Anita and her family came to Canada to celebrate our mom's birthday. We got to live my dream of taking Mom to Burnaby Village.

Meanwhile, Jason and the other dads took the kids go-karting at Castle Fun Park.

We also got ice cream at Birchwood Dairy. In the past, we took pictures of almost all the cousins lined up along this fence, but we just had a small group (with not much height variation!) this time.

The next day, we had Mom's birthday party at Tina's.... Happy 78th!

In the category of "not so fun," I have to mention Janae's first car. Earlier in the summer, this started out as a great find--an older car that was in good shape and that gave Janae freedom to spend time with friends and drive to beaches, anime festivals and other destinations without her pesky mom or dad.

Unfortunately, on a rainy day, Janae was driving herself to a job interview and experienced a minor crash. No one was hurt, but her car's air bag deployed ... and since she didn't have collision insurance on her car, getting it fixed has not been easy. We received two quotes that exceeded what she'd payed for the car, but then finally Jason found a mechanic willing to work on it for a lower price. Hopefully Janae will get it back eventually in good working order, but we'll have to see how it goes.

And the ultimate not-so-fun event: back to school.

Actually, Alaina was really looking forward to getting back into math and physics, but we had Eric starting middle school and Janae starting university, so people were a little nervous! But we're a week into it now, and luckily everyone has survived--including me :)
