Meet Baby Eric

After months and months of waiting, we finally got to say hello to our new little boy!
Eric Henry arrived at 10:10 p.m. on Thursday, January 9.
He weighed in at 8 pounds, 12 ounces--almost a full pound heavier than any of our other babies!  We thought he looked just like Alaina.
Eric was born only one day after his due date, but I felt like I was a couple of weeks overdue--since I'd had everything ready early in case he came before Christmas.
Thursday afternoon I went to the doctor, and found out I was 3-4 cm dialated.  Still, the doctor and I discussed having me induced and decided I would call the hospital the following morning and set up a time for that day.
I didn't really want to be induced, but I was starting to worry that I wouldn't go into labor--and I'd heard that for an older mother it is more dangerous to go past the due date.
So, that afternoon, I went for a walk in the rain with Ben, and we all hoped that I'd go into labor on my own that night.
I'd been to the hospital a week earlier on a false alarm--I'd been having contractions pretty close together but they'd stopped.  I'd felt a bit embarrassed, and had the feeling that I seemed like a first-time mom rather than a mother of almost four--so I was determined not to go to the hospital again unless I was SURE the baby was really on his way.
Thursday night we carried on as usual.  I made dinner, then Jason took Ben to cubs and I read with the girls and got them ready for bed.  When Jason got home he was reading with Ben when I started having painful contractions.  I timed them, though, and they seemed to be getting further apart rather than closer together.  I walked around a bit, then finally settled in on the rocking chair.
When the contractions kept coming, and getting more difficult to bear, I told Jason we should go to the hospital.  He called my dad--but since Dad had come over the previous week in the middle of the night when I'd "cried wolf," he just took his time and got here about 10 minutes later.
By the time Dad arrived, I was having a hard time walking and talking.  Jason and I got to hospital, and then--since it was after 9 p.m.--started the long walk from Emergency to the maternity ward.
I had to stop every minute or so for a contraction, and then--at the beginning of a long and dimly lit deserted hallway, I felt a strong warm gush that made me think I was delivering the baby right then and there.

I started to panic and told Jason to run ahead and take the elevator to get a nurse, but once he left I had to stop walking and just sit on the ground.
Luckily it was at this time that two security guards--who had seen us on their surveillance camera--came rushing towards me with a wheelchair.  They lifted me up and RAN to the elevator.  Once we got to Maternity, a nurse had Jason run ahead and open the door to a delivery room.  I was not even into the bed when they saw Eric coming.  And then there he was!
That night he got to meet his Auntie Tina, and the following morning his new big sister Alaina,
as well as his big brother Ben (who kept telling Eric, "You're a boy!!) and big sister Janae.
They were all pretty happy to see each other!  Ben has been holding and talking to Eric--he is amazing at putting his little brother to sleep.  Janae can't look at him without commenting on how cute he is, and Alaina loves being a BIG sister, rather than just a little one.

And now we are a family of . . . SIX!!
